Software I use: Web Browser

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Taking a step back for a second.

I have posted a few entries here and have mentioned FireFox, a web browser that is both secure and customizable. I have been using it for the last four years and am very satisfied with the added security and the various features that you can addon. If you are still using the default that came on your computer (Internet Explorer on Windows PCs and Safari on MACs) you should really give it a try. Install some addons and themes. Make it your own browser.

Also to see most web pages the best you should use Firefox. I have some things here on DigitalValdosta that do not work on Internet Explorer the same. So come join the flock of people that use Firefox.

Click the picture below and it will take you to the FeedFinder. This allows you too enter the web address of your favorite site and see if they have a feed. If they do then their content will be displayed. Enjoy!

Improve your Firefox

Firefox has a long list of addons that let you do a lot. There is one I use and enjoy called Ubiquity that improves the way you do things on the web.

Say you want to get a map to an address that is listed on a web page. Instead of having to copy and paste the address into your favorite map site you can highlight the address and use Ubiquity to pull up a map (You can even put it into your email). Another feature that I like is translation. If you go to a web site that you can't read because of the language you can use Ubiquity to translate the page by replacing the text on your screen with your local language.

You can also create and share themes for Ubiquity. Included on this page is my Ubiquity theme. Once you have installed the addon come back here and a notice will appear at the top of the window. Enjoy!

Stay Secure with Portable Firefox

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009
Firefox on its own is a very secure web browser that is updated regularly. However with it just being on your computer still poses some what of a security risk. But with constant break throughs in technology, new things become possible.

A few years ago I learned about a program that someone made called PortableApps. It's a set of programs that you can carry on your USB drive that not only carries with it the programs, but also their settings and passwords. Just a few of the programs that they offer are: Firefox, OpenOffice, 7Zip, and more.

So if you keep it with you you will know who has been on your browser with all of your bank passwords or your email accounts. You can also make a word document or slide show or even a pdf on a computer that does not have an office suite installed.
